British Touring Car Racing – 1980 The Tricentrol RAC British Saloon Car Championship

By now the upper capacity limit had been extended to 3500cc thus allowing an important addition to the ranks of Class A.  The two Rover 3500's were driven by Geoff Allam and Rex Greenslade.  It was a learning period and this was prior to the arrival of the Vitesse and its bespoilered bodywork.  Certainly the reliability was a shortcoming and it wasn't until the British GP support race that it scored its maiden victory.  Taking advantage of the weather conditions Jeff Allam fitted intermediate tyres that proved to be ideal for the conditions.  He ran away from the rest of the field.  But by August with only three more rounds to go Win Percy was leading the overall standings from Alan Curnow, Andy Rouse and Chris Hodgetts.
